History and Traditions of Iowa State

Iowa State University of Science and Technology was established in 1858 as a land-grant public research university. Until 1959 the university was known as Iowa State College of Agricultural and Mechanical Arts. Ames College developed into Iowa State University through the Morrill Land-grant Act of 1862. One of the first buildings on campus, Morrill Hall, named after Justin Smith Morrill who introduced the original bill. Iowa was the first state in the nation to accept the provisions of the Morrill Act. Part of the land-grant concept was the Iowa State Extensions offices which are now all over the state of Iowa. Iowa State has always been focused on higher education opportunities for all and liberal and practical teachings. Iowa State has always been a coeducational institution.

An average school day on campus started at 5:30am with breakfast at 6:45. Chapel was every day at 7:45am with class to follow until 12:45 when dinner was served. Every day the campus held mandatory study hours during which students must study quietly in their dorms. Every student was required to do part-time work which usually consisted of cooking, cleaning, or laundry. The first graduation class of 1872 included 24 men and two women.

The Farm House was the first building on campus. The famous mascot, Cy, was born in 1954.The Old Main building was built from 1864 to 1868, and stood approximately where Beardshear Hall is today. Old Main held the entire college; it houses all students and some faculty, classrooms, the library, chapel, museums and the dining hall. The building burned in 1900 and again in 1902 when it burned completely.

The Memorial Union, also known as the MU was built as a memorial for those who lost their lives in World War I. The building was completed in 1927, but has been expanded 7 times since.

Some traditions on campus include: the curse of the Zodiac in the MU, campaniling, Lancelot and Elaine the Swans in Lake Laverne, and VEISHEA.
